A guide for every variant

The rules

How it plays

  1. Move men diagonally on dark squares and capture by jumping an adjacent enemy into the empty square beyond.
  2. Captures are compulsory by default and continue as a multi-jump when another jump is available.
  3. A man reaching the far rank becomes a king.
  4. Capture every opposing piece or leave the opponent with no legal move to win.
Availability note. Expected October is an approximate target. The catalogue opens a few apps at a time, and each release waits until the one before it has settled in.

Ways to play

4 games for the price of one.

Every variant here is a game of its own — its own rules and legal-move checking, its own tables, its own illustrated guide, its own daily challenge, its own achievements and its own taught first game that walks you in. One purchase brings all 4. Each option below changes the table while keeping the engine's legal-move checks in charge.

Brazilian

8×8 board, 12 men a side, but the full International rules: flying kings, backward capture, take the most. The family's quickest, most decisive game.

  • Brazilian draughts plays the International (Polish) ruleset on the familiar 8×8 board: 12 men a side on the dark squares of the three nearest rows.
  • Captures are compulsory and you must take the sequence that captures the most pieces; uncrowned men may capture both forward and backward; and kings are flying — they slide any distance along a diagonal and may land on any empty square beyond a single jumped enemy.
  • Jumped pieces are lifted only when the turn ends, and a man that merely passes over the crowning row during a capture keeps jumping as a man.
  • The strong rules on the small board make it the quickest and sharpest game in the family: long capture chains appear early and material swings fast. This is the default ruleset.

Standard (American / English)

8×8 board, 12 men a side, forced captures, single-step kings.

  • American/English draughts on an 8×8 board: 12 men a side on the dark squares of the three nearest rows.
  • Men move and capture one square diagonally forward; captures are compulsory and chain into multi-jumps.
  • A man crowned on the far rank becomes a king that moves and captures one square in any diagonal direction.
  • Between careful players it often ends drawn — for a sharper game on the same board that usually reaches a decision, try Brazilian, the default.

International (Polish)

10×10 board, 20 men a side, flying kings, men capture backward, take the most.

  • International draughts on a 10×10 board: 20 men a side on the dark squares of the four nearest rows.
  • Captures are compulsory and you must take the sequence that captures the most pieces; uncrowned men may capture both forward and backward, and kings are flying — they slide any distance along a diagonal and may land on any empty square beyond a single jumped enemy piece.
  • Jumped pieces are only lifted when the turn ends, and a man that merely passes over the crowning row during a capture keeps jumping as a man.
  • The larger board and stronger kings make for a deeper, longer game than the 8×8 variant.

Dama Italiana

8×8 board, 12 men a side: a man may never take a king, and a choice of captures follows a strict priority ladder.

  • Dama Italiana is the Italian national game, played on an 8×8 board with 12 men a side.
  • Men move and capture one square diagonally forward only, and a king moves one square in any diagonal direction — as in the American game. Two rules make it its own game.
  • First, an uncrowned man may never jump a king: a crowned piece is untouchable by every man on the board, so reaching the crowning row is worth far more than elsewhere.
  • Second, when several captures are available the choice is not free — you must play the one that is best under an ordered ladder: take the greatest number of pieces; then, among equals, take with a king rather than with a man; then take the greatest number of kings; then take kings earliest in the sequence.
  • Together they make the Italian game a race to crown and a game of exact calculation, because which capture you are allowed to play is often decided for you.

Every online table is a ladder. Each Arena table and each tournament above comes at four entry levels — Challenge 10 GC, Contest 50 GC, Championship 200 GC, and a Friendly 1 GC table that returns the coin to everyone who finishes. The higher the entry level, the more places share the reward; aiOrion keeps 10% of a paid table's entries to pay for running the online game, and nothing from a Friendly one.

Make it yours. Start from any of these, adjust the settings the game allows, and save it as your own template. Online tables start the same way: copy one of the Arena tables, then set the entry, the rewards and who may join.
