A guide for every variant

The rules

How it plays

  1. Draw the top card of the stock or discard pile.
  2. Form sets of equal rank or suited runs of consecutive cards.
  3. In standard play, meld or lay off during the turn and finish by discarding.
  4. Go out first; cards left in opponents' hands determine the round score.
  5. Play rounds until the agreed target score is reached.
Availability note. Expected early November is an approximate target. The catalogue opens a few apps at a time, and each release waits until the one before it has settled in.

Ways to play

3 games for the price of one.

Every variant here is a game of its own — its own rules and legal-move checking, its own tables, its own illustrated guide, its own daily challenge, its own achievements and its own taught first game that walks you in. One purchase brings all 3. Each option below changes the table while keeping the engine's legal-move checks in charge.

Gin Rummy

The classic two-player game: knock at 10 or less, gin for a bonus.

  • The celebrated two-player member of the family.
  • Each player is dealt ten cards and melds stay concealed in hand: draw and discard as usual, but instead of laying melds on the table you go out by knocking when your unmatched 'deadwood' totals ten points or less — or go gin with zero deadwood for a 25-point bonus.
  • After a knock the defender lays off onto the knocker's melds; if their remaining deadwood equals or beats the knocker's, they score the difference plus a 25-point undercut bonus instead. First to 100 points wins the match.

Oklahoma Gin

Gin where the first upcard sets the knock limit — an ace demands gin.

  • Gin Rummy with one celebrated change: the first card turned up after the deal sets that hand's knock limit.
  • A seven means you may knock only at seven points of deadwood or less, a face card allows the classic ten, and an ace demands gin itself.
  • And when that upcard is a spade, the whole deal scores double — bonuses included.
  • The limit changes every deal, so some hands play as quick races and others as long sieges toward gin.
  • Everything else — concealed melds, lay-offs, the gin, big-gin and undercut bonuses — is Gin Rummy, played to a hundred and fifty rather than Gin's hundred.

Rummy

The basic game for 2–4: meld runs and sets on the table, go out first, and score the cards left in the other hands.

  • Basic (straight) Rummy for two to four players with a 52-card deck.
  • Draw a card, lay down a meld — a set of equal ranks or a run of consecutive cards in a suit — and lay off on melds already on the table, then discard.
  • Be the first to empty your hand: whoever goes out scores the value of every card left in the other players' hands, and the highest running total wins.
  • Go out in a single turn having laid nothing down before and the deal scores DOUBLE — going rummy.
  • Deal size, target score, melds per turn and the ace / lay-off rules are chosen on the template.

Every online table is a ladder. Each Arena table and each tournament above comes at four entry levels — Challenge 10 GC, Contest 50 GC, Championship 200 GC, and a Friendly 1 GC table that returns the coin to everyone who finishes. The higher the entry level, the more places share the reward; aiOrion keeps 10% of a paid table's entries to pay for running the online game, and nothing from a Friendly one.

Make it yours. Start from any of these, adjust the settings the game allows, and save it as your own template. Online tables start the same way: copy one of the Arena tables, then set the entry, the rewards and who may join.
